The Occupational Health Nurse (Return to work) is responsible for effective execution of clinical review services, to include DOT exam clinical review, return to work DOT exam review, respirator clearance questionnaire review, self-reported medication review, vaccine/TB review and diagnostic testing results review.



  • Ensures the use of standardized and consistent Occupational Health Services clinical review processes
  • Handle calls to OHS clinical review pertaining to return to work cases with excellent customer service
  • Tracks all open Return to Work cases and collaborates with client and driver to facilitate completion of Physician case review within 2 business days of case initiation and receipt of physical exam/pertinent records.
  • Provide updates to employer and disability vendor regarding status of medical cases in review. 
  • Collaborate with the client disability vendor during the review process, including but not limited to a weekly conference call to discuss pending cases.
  • Review medical documentation to determine if employees on medical leave meet DOT regulations and recommendations for return-to-work as DOT driver.  Refer to Consulting Physician for direction and any medical decision making beyond RN scope of practice.  Request additional documentation as necessary from employees and treating providers to make return-to-work determinations. 
  • Review physical exam documentation for completeness and accuracy, following established Occupational Health Services processes, refer to Consulting Physicians for direction and any medical decision making beyond RN scope of practice.  Follow-up with medical providers, clinics, employers and employee/drivers to obtain necessary corrections and/or additional medical documentation. 
  • Review DOT driver self-reported medications to determine if a safety sensitive letter is needed. Follow up with driver, medical provider, employer to obtain safety sensitive letter. Identify changes in medical status associated with reported medications. Notify employer of status change and recommendation for new DOT physical.
  • Review donor submitted records (laboratory and ancillary testing results, vaccine/TB testing records, OSHA respirator questionnaires) to determine if donor meets identified client requirements. Notify client of any requirements not met, with recommendation to schedule clinic visit for services.

  • Associate’s Degree in Nursing required
  • 3-5 years of hospital or outpatient nursing experience required 


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing preferred
  • Occupational nursing experience preferred Nurse Case Management experience preferred. 


  • Missouri Registered Nurse License required
  • Completion of NRCME training preferred or within first year of employment
  • Certified Occupational Health Nurse (preferred) OR
  • Certified Nurse Case Manager (preferred) 


  • Demonstrated interpersonal and collaboration skills
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong computer skills, especially in Excel and data analysis; skilled with the Microsoft Office Suite and comfortable navigating web-based programs
  • CDC recommendations to include vaccination/Tuberculosis testing
